Background of the Study
Transnational advocacy networks have become influential in shaping global environmental policy by mobilizing public opinion and pressuring governments to adopt sustainable practices. Climate justice movements, operating across borders, advocate for policies that address environmental degradation and its disproportionate effects on marginalized communities (Garcia, 2023). In Abuja, these movements harness digital platforms, grassroots activism, and international alliances to push for stronger environmental regulations and climate action. This study evaluates the impact of transnational advocacy on global environmental policy, focusing on how climate justice movements contribute to policy change and promote sustainable development (Hughes, 2024). The research analyzes advocacy strategies, campaign outcomes, and policy reforms initiated in response to international pressure. It also examines challenges such as political resistance, limited resources, and the difficulty of maintaining sustained advocacy momentum in a rapidly changing global context (Iverson, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite their growing prominence, transnational advocacy networks face significant obstacles in influencing global environmental policy effectively. In Abuja, climate justice movements encounter challenges such as political inertia, conflicting national interests, and insufficient funding, which can limit their impact (Garcia, 2023). Critics contend that while these networks raise awareness, translating public pressure into concrete policy changes remains problematic (Hughes, 2024). This study addresses the problem of determining whether transnational advocacy can overcome these challenges to effect meaningful environmental policy reforms, or if structural barriers persist that dilute the influence of climate justice movements (Iverson, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the strategies used by climate justice movements in Abuja.
To evaluate their impact on global environmental policy.
To recommend measures to strengthen transnational advocacy for environmental justice.
Research questions
How do climate justice movements influence global environmental policy?
What challenges limit their impact?
What strategies can enhance their effectiveness?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the role of transnational advocacy in driving environmental policy change. The insights will inform policymakers and activists on how to improve advocacy strategies to achieve sustainable environmental outcomes, particularly in Abuja (Hughes, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to evaluating transnational advocacy and its impact on environmental policy in Abuja, focusing on climate justice movements without addressing other advocacy sectors.
Definitions of terms
Transnational advocacy: Cross-border efforts by networks to influence policy (Garcia, 2023).
Climate justice movements: Activist groups advocating for equitable climate policies (Hughes, 2024).
Global environmental policy: International agreements and regulations addressing environmental issues (Iverson, 2025).
